Nashville - 6

Monday 4th July 2011

From Mike

Took an early morning walk this morning and visited the General Jackson paddle steamer . Out the front of the mooring area was a gentleman who said he was one of the  chefs on the boat. He was all dressed up in period costume in honour of the independence day celebrations. Including leather leggings, a felt hat decorated with a feather. He sat under a calico bushmans lean-to and had his billy boiling on a bushies stove.

Visited the Gaylord Opryland Convention centre and resort in ‘Music Valley’. This is an enormous hotel and convention centre. It has a running river (with fish) under the main roof. The river serves to create a man-made island in the center. All around it are manicured gardens and hotel room balconies overlook this indoor and air conditioned micro environment. The place also has its own specialty shops and restaurants along with waterfalls and swimming pools.
Took bus into downtown for 4th July celebrations. Well worth the effort. Downtown Nashville’s streets were closed off for the day. Special entertainment was laid on for everyone with masses of food stalls operating all day. Tens of thousands of people flocked into the city for this event, lots of people dressed in patriotic red, white and blue. And, although the bars and clubs were hopping with country music entertainment, I’ve got to say that everyone was very well behaved. There was no loutish behaviour which made it a great day for all.
The day concluded with an enormous fireworks display over the Cumberland river. This is claimed to be the 2nd or 3rd biggest (depending upon who you speak to) fireworks display of the July 4 celebrations in the country.

Before heading back to the hotel we listened to band at Legends Bar and visited Shotz bar......for some shots......and beer.
The biggest turkey legs you could imagine

The crowd waiting for the fireworks
