Flagstaff

Friday 10th June 2011
From Nevada to Arizona.
Today we travelled from Las Vegas to Flagstaff by Greyhound. Trip took almost 6 hours but the time went pretty quickly. The only stopping was at a scheduled stop to pick up or drop off passengers. The freeways are awesome making the trip a lot less tedious. Music in the ears helps too!
You couldn't get sick of the scenery. There was so much to see. Rocky hills, mountains, desert, pine forest and little towns which sprawled out for miles in some parts. Indian reservations too, which you couldn’t really see but you knew they were out there.
We saw lots of new housing areas, particularly just out of Las Vegas. One thing I have noticed about the houses here – all the new housing looks the same. There are large groups of houses clustered together which are absolutely identical. Not one unique feature about them. Very boring. The only interesting houses are the older ones, some of which are very quaint, just like you would expect to see on the old American movies.
We arrived in Flagstaff just after lunch. We had booked in at the Grand Canyon International Hostel which was within walking distance (10 minutes) of the bus station. The hostel is by no means plush but it has everything we need and the people here are really friendly and helpful. Big contrast to Las Vegas. We are looking forward to a couple of relaxing days here.
After we settled in we went for a walk around town. Wow, what a quaint little place. Lots of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. And busy too. Lots of people around, particularly tourists. Flagstaff is popular as a base from which to visit the Grand Canyon.
Our room overlooks the street and being Friday night there were plenty of people out and about. Over the road is a café which has a beer garden out the side. We had our own live entertainment without leaving the room.

Looking forward to the Grand Canyon trip tomorrow. Perfect birthday outing for Mike. He won't forget this one!
