Birthday celebrations

Saturday 11th June 2011

After a tiring day out at Grand Canyon we arrived back at the hostel around 6.30 and logged onto the intenet to check our emails.

Mike was given a lovely birthday surprise in the form of a skype call from the family who had gathered at our place for brunch especially for the occasion.

First the "grandies" and the "biggies" all sang happy bithday to Mike and wished him well. Then we got to chat to each of them and catch up on the latest goss.

Yep, situation normal. All trying to talk at once. And the usual highly intellegent conversation topics. Plenty of waves and kisses from EJ and Turtle and some serious looks from Olly......ooops, going soft.....maybe a small touch of homesickness there.......wait......ok.....its gone now......:)

To our family - Thanks to you all for arranging the skype. It was a really lovely thought and I know Mike appreciated it very much.

Mike reckons we should skype with the family again in a couple of weeks time. Isn't skype a wonderful invention!! It is just the best way to stay in touch. Especially for special occasions like birthdays.

But Mikes birthday surprises were not yet over.

After watching the family munching away on bacon and eggs we realised how hungry we were so we signed off and headed out for dinner. No two minute noodles on the menu tonight!!

We decided to try the Dara Thai restaurant which is located across the road from our accomodation. We figured it must be good as it was packed.

It was a good choice. Great food and excellent service. In fact so far we have had nothing but excellent service wherever we have been. And sometimes they go over and above what you expect.....such as on this occasion.

Following our huge meal and a bottle of wine we decided to order a dessert (something we have been trying not to do too much of). However we did decide to share one between the two of us, mainly because neither of us could have fitted in a whole one each and also because it made us feel less guilty.

When the waitress came over for our order I told Mike he could decide what to have because it was his birthday. He picked a cheesecake (excellent choice I thought). When it was delivered to the table he had a huge surprise. They had served the cheesecake with a candle on top and three of the waitresses came over to the table and sang Mike happy birthday. And all the nearby patrons started clapping!!!

I think Mike was a little embarrased by all the attention. But what great service....and totally unprompted.

They also presented us with a bowl of green tea icecream free of charge. It went really well with the cheesecake and yes.......we ate every last bit!!!

You can't get better than that. An excellent finish to the day. Hopefully a birthday Mike will always remember.
